We can — and do — present facts upon facts upon facts, evidence on top of evidence, risk assessment, statistical analysis, historical precedent, quantitative reasoning, the laws of mathematics, and yet more facts. And none of it — none of it — matters.
That’s why we get cretinous columns like this one from Josh Hicks of the Washington Post. I don’t have time to take apart every one of his dunderheaded suppositions, ignorant statements, and false assertions. My colleagues and I have already done it umpteen times in the pages of this blog, through hundreds of posts, over the past two years.
All the evidence in the world won’t make a dent.
Because people like Josh Hicks and the TSA apologists in his comment thread like their fear. They like their fear and they like to lick the authoritarian boot. And no amount of evidence correcting their false statements or proving them wrong will make a damn bit of difference.
